To follow up on a the story about Fremont Park from a few weeks back, it looks like the work is now complete. It turns out that crews were merely replacing the sidewalks in the Benton Park neighborhood recreational area. Still, the new aggregate sidewalks look good. It seems like crews were busy replacing sidewalks all around Benton park this winter, as similar replacements were made in front Pointers Market and the former location of McClozzi’s among other places.

Confusing headline huh? I guess it should really read “Fremont Park in the South St. Louis neighborhood of Benton Park in the midst of upgrades.” Because that is what it is getting. Over the last few days crews have removed most of the sidewalks at the 2.31 acres park, which is located on the south side of Lynch Street between McNair and Salena.
I have been unable to determine the exact nature and extend of the improvements, but it seems that the sidewalks will all be replaced at a minimum. The current layout of the park consists of a softball field, a playground, and a couple of open spaces with benches. There isn’t much too it, but its nice to see Fremont getting some attention, considering the fact that there are two larger parks in the neighborhood (Benton Park and Cherokee Park).

It seems like the “powers that be” in Jefferson City are at least playing lip-service in the effort to help revitalize St. Louis City. With their help the long discussed, sometimes pipe-dream of a project, known as the Chouteau Greenway (or Chouteau Lake District), might just be back on the table. Read more

When it comes to trees in the city, it is amazing how unaware people are. Take the tree lawn in this picture. These recently planted maple trees are wrong on so many levels: too large a species to be planted so close to a building, too small a tree-lawn to support the tree, and most importantly… they are planted UNDER A POWERLINE! Although the Neighborhood of Benton Park has continually improved in recent years, the park of the same name has long sat idle. Its ugly, its not user friendly, and its just not nice. Read more

Who would have guessed that it would have taken almost twenty years and $18 million to get to this point? In the late 1980’s Tower Grove Park was not a place to take the kids for an afternoon picnic or ballgame. Today, it is a proud member of our local collection of urban parks.
According to the South City Journal, the final piece in the creation of this renaissance is about to be put into place thanks to a $250,000 grant from Emerson and $100,000 in pledges from Anheuser-Busch Foundation.
This $350,000 will be used to completely recreate three out of the four lily ponds in the park. These ponds are located on the north side of the park near the Tower Grove Avenue entrance. Seen as the last remaining project needed to be done in the park, residents and park maintenance staff should be proud of the transformation they have witnessed and been a part of.
Now that the park is in great shape, more and more community and sports activities can be seen within the park’s borders. One good example is the Tower Grove Farmers Market (www.tgmarket.org). Last year’s market was such a success that vendors and volunteers are going for another round. The market will be open every Saturday from May 12 through October 27, 8:30am until 12:30pm. This is just one of the many examples of the progress the park has made.
So the next time you are in South City looking for something to do, stop by the park. You just might be surprised what you find. For a list of available activities and amenities visit the park’s website at www.towergrovepark.org.
