One half of me hates the fact that a cookie-cutter shopping center was built at the intersection of Loughborough and Highway 55 in Carondelet. It’s certainly not “urban.” But then, the other half you works too much and just wants convenience in a shopping destination really likes it. Regardless of your opinion on the design, it is good to see commercial development in far South City.
The shopping center has actually been there for a couple of years now, but if you don’t drive down Highway 55 you might not have known it. Here is the current lineup of stores:
- Lowes
- Schnuck’s
- Office Max
- St. Louis Bread Company
- Starbucks
- Qdoba
- Various small retailers
I use this shopping center alot myself, even though I have alternatives that are closer, because its really very nice. The other City Schnuck’s at Arsenal, Gravois and Chippewa are hit or miss, but this one is really nice. The produce is always fresh too, which I can’t say for the one on Arsenal, which I occasionally visit. As for the Lowes, the Home Depot on Kingshighway doesn’t even hold a candle to it. Its great for city residents to have a viable shopping option without having to spread their tax dollars to the county.
There are actually a few additions on their way too. Burger King looks to be nearly complete on the SE corner and Fifth Third Bank has a sign about their new location coming just to the west of Burger King. I am not sure how many other lots are available, but earlier this year Cracker Barrel was announced as a tenant. I haven’t heard about that for a while though, so it may have fallen through. Never been a big fan of their food, but they usually bring in a lot of traffic, which would be good for the area.
Carondelet is continuing improving with additions such as this and the upcoming recreation center in Carondelet Park. Don’t ignore this area when considering a location for the purchase of a home or investment property. It has a lot to offer.
