No left turns

The South Side Journal just posted a story about “No left turn” signs that I found interesting. I understand the need to prevent left turns at many intersections, but there are a few that are just ridiculous. I just moved near the intersection of Gravois and Jefferson and it drives me crazy that I can’t turn left on these streets. It might seem like I’m nitpicking, but I really think the prohibition negatively effects businesses in the area and deters people from moving in. Am I alone in this?

Left turns by there very nature are inefficient. If the streets are properly connected you can choose routes that dont require them. I am not against left turns but I do avoid them especially if there is no turn arrow. Read this story about UPS not making any left turns: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=3005890

  2. I remember hearing about UPS doing that. And I personally avoid left turns when I can. In most places there are very good alternatives to taking a left. But there are times when you have to go too far out of your way. Gravois the perfect example. Try to take a left on to Gravois from Arsenal going east. You have to wait at the light, drive past Gravois, then wait at the next light to take a left only to take an immediate right on Gravois. That is more waiting and more gas.

Since I moved to my new place on Gravois, I realized giving people directions here is a major pain. I can’t tell people to turn either way on Gravois or Jefferson. They have to go around back routes. It confuses me sometimes and I know these streets as well as one can.
